FMP Primary Research Gathering - Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Primary Research gathering - Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Henry Moore was a popular occurrence that appeared quite often throughout the park. This was an introductory board that was at the entrance into a section of the park.  Although Henry Moore wasn't an artist that I was researching looking into his sculptures of his 'body form' I took interest in how he interpreted the faces and shapes.

HENRY MOORE

Henry Moore - Draped seated Woman
(BRONZE)

This was one of Henry Moore's sculptures I came across at the beginning of touring the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, This sculpture was created out of Bronze but to me looks as though it has the effect of Marble or Old stone with the look of the Colour and Texture, There is great detail regarding the creases in the clothing the sculpture is wearing, But the facial detail isn't much and seems to be quite basic.

Henry Moores - Large Totem head
(BRONZE)

This sculpture Isn't anything I could work with as I was looking for sculptures that worked with metal and looked at bodies or Animals. Again this is created out of Bronze, where-as this one looks more like it is the material it was made out of, but also has a sort of wooden looking effect.

BACK VIEW

Henry Moore - Reclining Figure: Hand
(BRONZE)

This sculpture resulted in less detail as to being recognised as a female(?) It looked more like one morphed shape to somewhat represent a figure sat posing. There is no facial features included or any sorts of arms and legs formed. Henry Moore again worked in Bronze, this seems to be favourite material that he uses. This one looks misleading in material too as it looks similar to that of the 'Seated Draped Woman' sculpture.

Henry Moore - Reclining Figure: Angles
(BRONZE)

This one Represents another Woman in my opinion posing from a side angle. This one was more visible features of a body such as the legs and proportions. The facial features aren't seemingly important as realistic in Henry's works. This one seems to have Overly large eyes(?) that take over the small face/head,

Henry Moore Reclining Figure; Points
(BRONZE)

I couldn't quite tell what the shapes of these sculptures represented, they sort of look like limbless torso's from different angles and in a sort of twisted shape. These are also made out of Bronze but they misinterpret and look as though they are created out of stone, with the look of the colour and texture.

ELISABETH FRINK

Elisabeth Frink - Riace II, Riace III, Riace IV
(BRONZE)

These sculptures were quite spaced apart from one another, and all seem to have independent names(?) for each. (but they're didn't seem to be a Riace I) They seem to represent men, but the faces look as though they're wearing masks,  I wasn't quite sure if they seemed to have different emotions on there faces, which might be why they are distinguished with different names, The differences that are between them are

probably the way the arms are posed, or there legs, and the way they are facing. The detail worked into them is very realistic, (clearly stating the gender) but also the proportions are very accurate with regards to the arms, torso, legs etc. they have included detail in the chest, fingers and toes, which I really enjoy when looking at sculptures. I like them to look very realistic as I think that's important to make them look unique.

 JONATHAN BOROFSKY

Jonathan Borofsky - Molecule man
1+1+1
(ALUMINIUM PLATE)

This one interested me as I was really curious about what the sculpture was made out of which was Aluminium. I think this one depended on what perspective/angle you looked at it from as sometimes it would look like 2 but then there were 3. They look like 3 men pushing against one another with holes all the way through each, I quite liked this sculpture.

JULIAN OPIE

Julian Opie - Galloping Horse
(LED DOUBLE SIDED MONOLITH)

Im not familiar with the things this piece is created out of but I think it is a very nice, It seemed to be a recurring loop of imagery created with the LED lighting. The lights showed every moment of the horse galloping, it didn't jump but flowed instead creating a powerful and steady movement with the movement of the legs and hair. This is obviously something I couldn't really do but I liked it none the less.

LYNN CHADWICK

Lynn Chadwick - Cloaked figure IX
(BRONZE)

This sculpture looks as though it could be a female figure in a cloak (from seeing the front of the statue) This sculpture was interesting as its head is in the appearance of a pyramid shape, without any face recognition what so ever, But the detail of the cloak is there. This was made out of bronze but again has a different colour to it as looks as though it is made out of Iron or some darker looking metal.

Lynn Chadwick - Little Girl
(BRONZE)

This is another one created by Lynn Chadwick. This one is evidently female with the name and noticeable features it has. Her theme seems to be having no interest in a face, but rather a pyramid shape for a head. This one has no arms either but looks as though it is wearing some sort of dress whilst sat on something that may represent a bench. Again this looks like a darker metal rather than bronze, like the other sculpture she made. (Cloaked figure)

MAGDALENA ABAKANOWICZ

Magdalena Abakanowicz - Ten seated figures

Im not sure what this was made out of as I couldnt find the small Plaque. But they look as though they are possibly made out of bronze. None of the figures have any arms or a head. Apparently the posture of each is suggesting formality, with the upright postures.

MASAYUKI KOORIDA

Masayuki Koorida

Again I wasn't sure where the small plaque was, But to me these look as though they are made out of a nice marble material, with the smoothness and pattern within the sculptures. These looked as though they were splats on the floor. I wasn't quite sure what they represented, but their finish was really nice.

NIKI DESAINT PHALLE

Niki deSaint Phalle - Buddha

This one looked as though it was made out of multiple materials, with different types of mosaic looking style collages that differs all over its body. This is obviously an creative interpretation of the religious figure Buddha. It is sat in the standard position with its legs crossed and hands put together. This is the most colourful sculpture I managed to come across whilst wandering the Park, as everywhere on its body has a different mix of colours and shiny objects, Its quite the interesting piece.

PHILLIP KING

Phillip King - Shogun

This one looked as though it was created out of bits of metal and logs/wood. It was quite the jumble in terms of being put together in my opinion it didn't really represent anything, as there wasn't really any form or look of a figure or animal in this.

But with this I guess I could look into it as I was thinking for my final piece working with some scrap metal or other things, but atleast create a body part of piece of some sort, not just materials thrown together.

SOPHIE RYDER

Sophie Ryder
(BRONZE)

I don't know the name of this piece but it was quite the interesting sculpture, It was really large in scale. The sculpture is cut into two with rods connecting the two halves together. The sculpture is apparently created out of bronze but looks like it is made out of stone and as though it was chiseled away at, It seems like it is representing a woman, but also half rabbit for the head. Reading the information board she seems as though she enjoys the relationship between a woman and Hare, by interpreting this within her sculptures as half human half animal and see's a good connection whilst creating these.

TOM PRICE

Tom Price - Network

This is most likely made out of bronze like alot of the other statues that I had seen In Yorkshire sculpture park. This was the most lifelike looking sculpture that I came across, it looks like the interpretation of a man in a relaxed posture and relaxed facial expression that is using a phone or some sort of social device. This sculpture is probably representing how today's society looks due to using devices like we do.

The detail is very good from the facial features, clothing detail, and even the expression and stance that he is posed in. These are the sorts of sculptures I enjoy the most as I see the hard work and detail that has been done to make it look as good as it does.

ANIMALS

These are some images I took of the sheep and lambs that were around, These could come of use if I were to go into looking into animals, and how I could interpret them into my chosen them Bio-mechanical for my FMP.
